“Garden of History/Herstory”
Woolmers Estate – 10 Days on the Island Arts Festival – Tasmania
Woolmers Estate is a World Heritage Site in Tasmania. Much is known of the Thomas Archer succession line at Woolmers but very little is known of the women that also populated the estate. This text-garden uses extracted words and phrases from letters sent by the Archer women back to England. These letters often contained very sensual and sensitive writing that seemed incongruous with the predominately male atmosphere of the Estate. The mulberry tree location was an obvious choice as it had the references to childrens play and feminity.
